Province of

General Carrera

Región de Aysén

Discover the beautiful province of General Carrera, located in the southern part of the Aysén Region. It stands out for its immense size and the beauty of the great General Carrera Lake, officially named in 1959.

Its original Tehuelche name was Chelenko, meaning ‘lake of storms’.

The province includes towns mostly settled around the lake basin, such as Chile Chico, Puerto Río Tranquilo, and Puerto Ibáñez, among others. These towns enjoy a microclimate that makes them especially attractive to visitors exploring this wonderful natural environment.

The commune of Río Ibáñez spans 5,977 km², from the border with Argentina to the heart of the Andes.

It consists of 5 populated centers and is known for its diverse landscapes, lakes, rivers, archaeological heritage, rural traditions, and welcoming people.

National Reserve

Cerro Castillo

South of Coyhaique lies the Cerro Castillo National

Reserve, created in the 1970s to protect the region’s

countless native and endemic flora and fauna

species. This reserve covers 180,000 hectares. Its

untamed nature reflects the natural, geological,

and volcanological changes to which this region

has been subjected for centuries. The Cerro Castillo

National Reserve has several trails, which were laid out and used by settlers in the region for livestock transportation. It allows visitors to cross the Cerro Castillo mountain range that separates the watersheds of the Aysén and Ibáñez rivers.

Sanctuary

Marble Caves

Limestone rock located in front of Puerto Río Tranquilo, on Lake General Carrera.

The Marble Chapels are spectacular limestone formations located across from Puerto Río Tranquilo, on Lake General Carrera. Just a few minutes away by boat, these caverns have been shaped by thousands of years of waves, which have eroded the stone and exposed the marble in all its splendor. Their unique shapes, sculpted by nature, resemble a great cathedral floating on water, hence their name. The complex is made up of three main formations: the Chapel, the Cathedral, and the Marble Cave. On good days and when the lake level allows, it is possible to sail under their arches and explore their interiors, where the light creates a play of colors on the water-polished walls.

Pumalín

In the northern part of Chilean Patagonia lies Pumalín National Park, created to protect one of the most pristine temperate ecosystems on the planet. Its vast forests, lakes, fjords, and mountains safeguard an exceptional biodiversity.

With more than 400,000 hectares, this park invites visitors to explore trails among ancient alerce trees, waterfalls, and valleys that reflect the untamed nature of southern Chile. Pumalín stands as a symbol of commitment to conservation and sustainable tourism in the Los Lagos region.
